The 7 Habits of Men & Women

The 7 Habits of Men & Women
(Something to grin on :-D...)
Men:
  1. All men are extremely busy.
  2. Although they are so busy, they still have time for women.
  3. Although they have time for women, they don't really care for them.
  4. Although they don't really care for them, they always have one around.
  5. Although they always have one around them, they always try their luck with others.
  6. Although they try their luck with others, they get really pissed off if the woman leaves them.
  7. Although the woman leaves them they still don't learn from their mistakes and still try their luck with others.

Women:

  1. The most important thing for a woman is financial security.
  2. Although this is so important, they still go out and buy expensive clothes.
  3. Although they always buy expensive clothes, they never have something to wear.
  4. Although they never have something to wear, they always dress beautifully.
  5. Although they always dress beautifully, their clothes are always just "An old rag".
  6. Although their clothes are always "just an old rag", they still expect you to compliment them.
  7. Although they expect you to compliment them, when you do, they don't believe you.

Dont you think it is so complicated ?

A Song that inspired Pancham Da

Original Version:
"Sing" - by "Carpenters"

Sing, sing a song
Sing out loud
Sing out strong
Sing of good things, not bad
Sing of happy, not sad

Sing, sing a song
Make it simple
To last your whole life long
Don’t worry that it’s not good enough
For anyone else to hear
Just sing, sing a song

(La la la la la, la la la la la la
La la la la la la...)

(Sing, sing a song
Let the world sing along
Sing of love there could be
Sing for you and for me)

Sing, sing a song
Make it simple
To last your whole life long
Don't worry that it's not good enough
For anyone else to hear
Just sing, sing a song
(Just sing, sing a song)

Just sing, sing a song
(La la la la la, la la la la la la
La la la la la la...
La la la la la, la la la la la la
La la la la la la...
La la la la la, la la la la la la
La la la la la la...
La la la la la, la la la la la la
La la la la la la...
La la la la la, la la la la la la

Book Review: Call of the Wild by Jack London

I just finished the book "Call of the Wild" by Jack London". I had a recommendation on this book from Amit Da who is ardent reader and book lover.

I really liked the storyline, the characterization and overall presentation in the book. The tale is all about Buck, a 4yrs old shepherd dog, who is kidnapped from a judge's residence and later pass through the hands of multiple owners thereby being forced to face hard cruelty and struggle (for existence and survival) in real life.

The vivid descriptions and expressions used throughout in the book has brought out Buck as more of a lively person than a dog. One will feel very close to Buck's feeling out of all his experiences. Indeed a great work, or a portrait, by Jack London.

I really liked the following lines from the book (Chapter III. The Dominant Primordial Beast):
"There is an ecstasy that marks the summit of life, and beyond which life cannot rise. And such is the paradox of living, this ecstasy comes when one is most alive, and it comes as a complete forgetfulness that one is alive. This ecstasy, this forgetfulness of living, comes to the artist, caught up and out of himself in a sheet of flame; it comes to the soldier, war-mad on a stricken field and refusing quarter."

I won't spoil the fun by telling about the ending in the book. It is a must read for all story lovers.

I have plan to read the counterpart of this book by the same author - "White Fang"

Funny Conversation

Below are collection of some funny cutouts in Bengali which I had received through forwarded email. And here goes the translation:

Conversations Before Marriage: (After marriage:)
Boy: So, you are ready at last! I was hardly able to wait for it.
Girl: Will you leave me?
Boy: No not at all. Don't ever think about it.
Girl: Do you love me?
Boy: Obviously, forever.
Girl: Will you ever cheat me?
Boy: No way, how could you ever think about that?
Girl: Will you ever play with my beautiful hair?
Boy: Yes, whenever I will get a chance I will.
Girl: Will you ever hurt me?
Boy: Are you mad? I am not that type of person.
Girl: Would I will be able to trust on you?
Boy: Yes
Girl: Oh my Darling !!

(For coversation after marriage, just read the above conversations in reverse order (i.e, from bottom to top)).

And here is one more on definitions in Bengali...this one is difficult to be translated

Another Nostalgic Song in Bengali - E Jeno Ajana Ek Poth

E Jeno Ajana Ek Poth

Sapno eki cheye je dekhi

Janina du chokhe mor

E alo choralo aaj ke?

Janina notun e gaan

E prane bhoralo aaj ke?

Phurale e gaan robe resh

Ohhhhhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhhhhh Ohhhhhhh....

E Jeno Ajana Ek Poth

Ke jane kothaye hobe sesh

Khushi holo mon akhas ke aaj dekhe

kaatbe amaar belaa shudhu-i chobi enke

janina kane kane ki katha batash koye jaye

janina e mon amar kanoje jharna hoye jaye

Ohhh Ohhh Ohhh....

E Jeno Ajana Ek Poth Ke jane kothaye hobe sesh

Sapno eki cheye je dekhi e jeno achena ek desh !

Another nostalgic bengali song from the film "Rajkanya (1965)". Actor Uttam Kumar is looking stunning in this song. Shymal Mitra's composition and singing has added the eternal touch to the song doing justification to the flawless lyrics.

Cannibalism - Yuck ! Yuck ! Yuck !

Today as I was searching for something on the web, my attention caught on an article posted in "How Stuffs Work" ... it is on How Cannibalism Works.

The first thing that comes into our mind whenever we hear the word Cannibalism is eating human flesh. The dictionary explains it as "The practice of eating the flesh of your own kind".

Just for the sake of curiosity I read the first page of the article. It is so fascinating that it has been there from pre-historic days and someway or the other people have been following it - some by means of rituals and others are forced to do so for living.

The article talks about two kind of cannibalism (aka anthropophagy in science):

  1. Customary anthropophagy - where people practise this out of their interest.
  2. Survival anthropophagy - where people have no other option but to adapt, for survival.

It is so amazing to know how at different situations people have turned into Survival Anthropophagy just for survival. It reminds me of a movie which I saw sometime back where people survived a plane crash on the high top of mountain and could survive 70 days by forcing themselves to eat people who died in the crash. And also about another documentary in Discovery Channel where they were showing how to survive in extreme situations like if you are deserted in a sea or island.

It was interesting reading to know about lot more facts and history associated with this. If interested please visit : http://history.howstuffworks.com/historians/cannibalism.htm

Anyway, to make it short, what I feel that all these facts proves clearly that we human have a strong presence of animal characteristics within ourselves and we can go to any extent for the sake of self survival. In turn, it also proves Darwin's theory on existing of species - hence leading to the truth that "Man is the most intelligent species in this World".

Main Jahaan Rahoon, Main Kahin Bhi Hoon

Very recently I heard this song from the film "Namastey London" at my friend Subham's house and got blown away by the song, tempo and its lyrics. I am liking it more I hear it. How could I ever miss to hear this song.... it is just awesomely sung and composed. Here goes the song and the lyrics following it:

Main Jahaan Rahoon, Main Kahin Bhi Hoon
Teri Yaad Saaath Hai
Kisi Se Kahoon, Ke Nahi Kahoon
Yeh Jo Dil Ki Baat Hai

Kehne Ko Saath Apane Ek Duniya Chalti Hai
Per Chhupke Is Dil Mein Tanhaayi Palti Hai
Bas Yaad Saath Hai , Teri Yaad Saaath Hai

Main Jahaan Rahoon, Main Kahin Bhi Hoon
Teri Yaad Saaath Hai

Kahin To Dil Mein Yaadon Ki, Ek Suli Gad Jaati Hai,
Kahin Har Ek Tasveer Bhahut Hi Dhondhali Pad Jati Hai,
Koi Nayi Duniya Ke Naye Rango Mein Khush Rehta Hai ,
Koi Sab Kuch Paake Bhi Yeh Mann Hi Mann Kehta Hai,
Kehne Ko Saath Apane Ek Duniya Chalti Hai ,
Per Chhupke Is Dil Mein Tanhaayi Palti Hai,
Bas Yaad Saath Hai , Teri Yaad Saaath Hai ,

Kahin To Beete Kal Ki yadein, Dil Mein Hi Utar Jaati Hai,
Kahin Jo Dhage Tute To Malaayen Bhikar Jaati ,
Koi Dil Mein Jagah Nayi, Baaton Ke Liye Rakhta Hai,
Koi Apni Palko Par Yaadon Ke Diye Rakhta Hai,
Kehne Ko Saath Apane Ek Duniya Chalti Hai ,
Per Chhupke Is Dil Mein Tanhaayi Palti Hai,
Bas Yaad Saath Hai , Teri Yaad Saaath Hai !!

Leh and Markha Valley Trek

20Jun2008, Sunday - Flight from Delhi to Leh :
The irritating alarm started ringing at 0245 hrs reminding me about my flight to Leh. I stopped the alarm and reluctantly got up from the cozy bed. After freshening up I took a quick shower and finalized my backpack packing and camera - all is well packed and batteries are fully charged. Ideally it should take around 30 minutes drive to reach Airport and would give me enough time board the Airdeccan flight departing at 5AM.

I got a phone call from Rahul-da who is anxiously waiting in the airport for me to join in. I assured him that I would reach well in time. My friend Partha, who works at Delhi drops me at Airport ... it took us 25 mins to reach the Delhi Airport from Partha's house. It is still dark outside and about to dawn. I found Rahul-da impatiently waiting at the entrance gate and together we went inside to collect the boarding pass. After getting the boarding pass, I went to meet the other new friends from Pune - Raja, his cousin Sunny, Leena, her sister Nirmal and Lekha. Raja was having a troubled time after he broke his glass but soon he could get his spare glass out of the checked in luggage during luggage identification.

Our flight departed at the right time and luckily I got the window seat. We could find very few Indians as co-passengers, except few newly married couples. We realized that the temperature difference between outside and inside the aircraft is causing the fog coming outside of the air conditioner.

The flight duration from Delhi to Leh is just 1Hr30min. I could see many co-passengers continuing their sleep inside the aircraft, while few others like me are excited about flying over the Himalayas and peeping out of the porthole to capture the snow capped Himalayan mountain peaks. I could get great views of the Himalayas which is difficult to explain. I tried to capture them with my camera.

Soon, the landscape changed from black and white snow filled mountains to barren rocky mountains with very fewer green vegetation in pockets of valleys. The water stream running through the vast mountain desert tell us all about the rough weather condition in that vast terrain. The light and shade compositions attributed by the sunlight and clouds are just fascinating which keeps changing as the clouds keep floating around. So, the same frame would look very different from time to time with the play of lights and shades.

The flight gradually descended taking sharp turns and twists on to the plains of Leh. We all passengers were thrilled as the wings of the aircraft went unusually close to a monastery (Spituk Monastery) just before touching the small airstrip of Leh. The passengers applauded and cheered after the skillful landing of the aircraft.

Leh Airport is restricted army area and all passengers are escorted by jawans with smile on their face. The moment we descended from the Aircraft, we all were left spellbound for few moments by the sights outside. The magnificent view of lofty mountains and colouration due play of sunlight and white fluffy clouds filled all our heart. This is what we were longing to see in our naked eyes. It is something natural and unbelievable. We could see mountainous desert all around us and some snow filled white peaks. We couldn't stopped taking out our camera but soon stopped by security guards because of army restrictions.

Soon after collecting all our luggage we stepped out of the Airport and found someone from Tapo Stanzin's office waiting for us to receive us. He took us to Mahey Guest House located in Tukcha Main Road, Leh. We are suppose to take rest for two days to get acclimatized to Leh's high altitude before we start our trek.

The Mahey Guest House provided us a cozy and homely environment. The view from the courtyard is remarkable. They have a small garden where we could find variety of flowers and vegetables. The green of the garden gives a very good match to dark grey mountains in the front with brilliant white peaks and blue sky. The white cloud playing a vital role in forming patterns of shadows on the mountains and plains in the front. And the pattern keeps changing every minute because of drifting clouds.

I could experienced that the place is unusually calm and quite. It is so quieter that one could hear the humming flies or bees passing by - everything felt so nicer to our eyes and ears. The view from Mahey Valley Guest House is so much picturesque. The colourful flowers in midst of green vegetations, dark mountains in the front with blue sky is just awesome. I felt like sitting there rest of the day and watch them again and over again. I could see so many sparrows and other birds chirping and playing around the coutyard of our guest house.

As we entered the guest house we found an inviting dining hall cum lobby decorated in tibetian/ladakhi style - tea table and low raised cushioned seats running all around the endge of the room - very similar to Japanese dining setup. The tibetian chanting music playing at the background have added a new dimension to the setup.

We were all very hungry, having skipped our morning breakfasts. We quickly ordered for our breakfast and went for freshening up. We finished our breakfast in our room and crashed in the bed. It was late afternoon when we woke up and hungry too. We quickly ordered for our lunch meals and gathered in the courtyard of the guesthouse for a lavish lunch. Most of the vegetables (cauliflowers, cabbages, peas), were hand picked from the garden of the guest house, had added pleasant taste to our food. After stomach full of lunch we crashed once more into our bed.

Some of us, including me was feeling slight headache, due to high altitude and lack of oxygen supply to our brain. It was only end of 2nd day when the headache had completely gone.

Rest of the day we spent watching movies in the lobby room, sipping cup of tea and admiring the view of the mountains and flowers in the guesthouse. At night we had one more round of delicious meal and went to our bed. Getting sleep was bit uneasy for many of us and we had to get up many times between our sleep to catch our breath.

Poila Baishakh

Shubho Nababarsho!

Welcome to the New Bengali Year. Baishakh is the first month of Bengali calendar. According to the Bengali calendar, the year starts from 'Baisakhi' that is the 13th or the 14th of April of the Gregorian calendar. From the time when English calendar was an unknown entity, Bengali calendars reigned supreme. English calendar started getting precedence over Bengali Calendars due to the influence of the British Empire on India. A plethora of socio-economic factors gave rise to the importance of English calendars. However, of late, Bengali calendar has somewhat regained it's lost glory.

Earlier, there were two methods of calculation - the 'Sauramana' system based on the solar year and the 'Chandramana' system based on the lunar year. Around 1181 BC, the two were merged. Although based on this system, all of India would have one New Year Day, in actual practice, different days are followed in different states based on past practice that is several decades old. The Bengali Calendar is based on ancient sub-continental calendars which was codified and standardized by the Mughal Emperor Akbar about 6 centuries ago. The start date of the Begali calendar was made to coincide with the start date of the Islamic calendar. The calendar is a solar one which is composed of six seasons that revolve around the region's agricultural cycle. In India, although the Gregorian calendar is used for official purposes, Hindus have a New Year of their own, based on the 'Samvatsar' system.

For the past few years, the month of 'Baishakh' is getting it's due importance. Baishakh is one of most auspicious month for the Bengalis. Bengali businessmen - small and big - take up the occasion to open their new shops, outlets as well as accounts. It ushers the beginning of agricultural production of Bengal. The rural folks still follow the Bengali calendar. Most of the events in the villages take place according to the Bengali calendar.
From time immemorial, the month of Baishakh has acquired a pride of place. It is considered the most auspicious month for marriage, the most auspicious month for undertaking any business venture and it is also the month when all agricultural production process begins. Bengali's think that any child born in this month would acquire all the qualities of being a prodigy. No wonder, the great Rabindranath Tagore, was born in this month. Rabindranath was born on the 25th of Baishakh.

If one have ever walked on the streets of Kolkata sometime in the beginning of April, one will be surprised with all the crowd, and perhaps curiously ask to oneself as to why all this shopping. Well this is the end of the month Chaitra and you can't stop people to get themselves prepared for their cherished Poila Baishak or 'Naba Barsho'. Yes the Bengalis celebrate this day as their New Year.

The first day of Baishakh remains a holiday in Bengal. The day is called 'Poila Baisakh'. The day starts with 'Surya Pranam'. Generally new clothes are purchased and worn by the family members. With powdered rice, housewives make beautiful designs called Alpana on the floor of their houses. People wear new dresses and go about socialising. The day is considered to be auspicious. Mostly elderly people visit the Ma Kali's temple with their offerings and prayers for the well being of society. Many cultural events are organized, sweets are distributed and greetings exchanged. The day is celebrated with much pomp and funfair. The Bengali New Year begins at dawn, and the day is marked with singing, processions, and fairs. On the day of Poila Baishakh, cultural programmes are organised throughout Bengal to welcome the new year. People pray for the well-being and prosperity. In the morning, processions called 'Probhat Pheri' (early morning processions) is taken out in various parts of Kolkata. Young ladies clad in white saris with red borders and young men clad in dhuti and punjabi perform on the road, welcoming the arrival of the new year. Through its traditional festive spree, offering to Lord Ganesha, 'Hal Khata' (new ledger), new clothes and of course Rabindrasangeet, West Bengal greets Poila Baishakh on a note of optimism and wishful thoughts. The day marks the end of Chaitra and welcomes Nor'wester, the first spate of rainfall in an otherwise long hot and humid summer.

The last month of the preceding year i.e. Chaitra, becomes a month of frenetic activity for all garment traders. All over Bengal, Chaitra Sale is organised with great fanfare and garments are sold with heavy discounts. In Kolkata, if one visits the Hatibagan area during the month of Chaitra, the person would get an idea about the magnitude and importance of Chaitra Sale. In fact, the arrival of Chaitra Sale announces the arrival of Baishakh. It also signals the end of the year. Kolkata during this time reels under a different type of invasion. The crowds throng the various marketing hubs to avail of the discount that is offered on garments and other consumer products before the Bengali New Year. This phenomenon is known all over Bengal as the Chaitra Sale. Men, women and children of all ages are seen to visit markets in different corners of the city, to buy a summer collection and new clothes for Poila Baishakh. Vibrant souls and colourful clothes fills the pavements where every trader, big and small, settles down with their largesse. People from all trades of life visits shops which are giving discount ranging from 10% to 50%. And Kolkata is once again painted with festive hues.

Traditionally, businesses start this day with a new ledger, clearing out the old. Hindus generally associate their New Year with Lakshmi the Goddess of Wealth. Therefore Lakshmi puja is also common. Fairs and festivals are held all over the country, where singers sing traditional songs welcoming the new year. Food vendors sell traditional foods and artisans sell traditional handicrafts.

The day of Poila Baishakh also sees hectic activities in the film studio areas of Tollygunge. Most of the producers prefer to perform the 'mahurat' on that day. Producers pray for better business prospects. It is a common belief that if one can release a film on the day of Poila Baishakh, it shall do good business. In India, the day of new release in friday, and not every year the day of Poila Baishakh coincides with a friday. On the day of Poila Baishakh, the studio area of Tollygunge becomes a very colourful place, with actors, actresses and other technicians doing their rounds resplendent in their best attires.

If the rest of Bengal celebrates Poila Baishakh, can the Maidan be left far behind? All the football teams, including the giants, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, start their practice for the season by performing the 'Bhoomi Puja' on that day. Players of the respective teams gather in the respective grounds and start their practice by kicking the balls. It is a gala affair on that day, with famous players of yesteryears paying a visit to the grounds on that day.
The old year, for better or worse, is gone for good. The new year has begun with fresh promise. Here's our chance to start again, to do it right this time, to have another shot at success… at glory… at accomplishing what we resolve to. The day of Poila Baishakh bears immense significance in the life of Bengalis. It is not the first day of another year, it is the first day of hope, of reckoning, and of surprises. Let us all hope that the new year brings us joy, well-being and prosperity.

Subho Naba Barsho again ... (Happy New Year!)

3 Minute Management Course

Lesson 1
A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings. The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs. When she opens the door there stands Bob, the next door neighbour. Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you £800 to drop that towel.' After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob. After a few seconds, Bob hands her £800 and leaves. The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs. When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks 'Who was that?' 'It was Bob the next door neighbour' she replies. 'Great!' the husband says, 'did he say anything about the £800 he owes me?'

Moral of the story: If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure.

Lesson 2
A priest offered a Nun a lift. She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident. After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg. The nun said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?' The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again. The nun once again said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?' The priest apologised 'Sorry sister but the flesh is weak'.Arriving at the convent, the nun went on her way. On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129. It said, 'Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.'

Moral of the story: If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.

Lesson 3
A sales rep, an administration clerk and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp. They rub it and a Genie comes out. The Genie says, 'I'll give each of you just one wish'. 'Me first! Me first!' says the admin clerk. 'I want to be in the Bahamas , driving a speedboat, without a care in the world'. Puff! She's gone. 'Me next! Me next!' says the sales rep. 'I want to be in Hawaii, relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life'. Puff! He's gone. 'OK, you're up', the Genie says to the manager. The manager says, 'I want those two back in the office after lunch'.

Moral of the story: Always let your boss have the first say.

Lesson 4
An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, 'Can I also sit like you and do nothing?' The eagle answered: 'Sure, why not.' So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Moral of the story: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sittingvery, very high up !

Lesson 5
A turkey was chatting with a bull.. 'I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree,' sighed the turkey, 'but I haven't got the energy.' Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?' replied the bull. 'They're packed with nutrients.' The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally, after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.

Moral of the story: Bullsh*t might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.

Lesson 6
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field. While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realise how warm he was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

Moral of the story:

  1. Not everyone who sh!ts on you is your enemy
  2. Not everyone who gets you out of sh!t is your friend
  3. And when you're in deep sh!t, it's best to keep your mouth shut!
